Questions continue to surround the Los Angeles mayoral election, especially as voters ask whether outside oversight — including federal review — could be used to verify questionable ballots.
The answer is yes, but with limits. Because federal races were also on the ballot, the federal government has a legitimate legal interest in election-law compliance. Federal authorities may step in when there are issues involving voter fraud, ballot fraud, civil-rights violations, voter intimidation, noncitizen voting in a federal election, corrupt election officials, or other violations of federal election law.
There is also a practical role for technology. Artificial intelligence could be used to sort through ballot images, cast-vote records, scanner logs, and batch totals to flag questionable ballots for human review. AI should not decide voter intent or determine the winner, but it could help ...
